A simple new method to count varroa.
(Please note: when inspecting hives it is recommended to wear protective clothing and calm bees with a smoker)
We strongly advise that you find the queen before the test and safely isolate her.
To use: Remove the lid and add a small amount of windscreen washer fluid or one part rubbing alcohol mixed with 4 parts water to cover the bottom of the white collection basket.
Remove a brood frame from your hive.
Take the white basket from the Varroa Check and use it to scoop a sample of bees. The markers on the inside of the basket indicate a quantity of either 200 or 300 bees.
Return the brood frame, and then return the filled basket to the Varroa Check container and screen on the lid.
Gently shake the Varroa Check to immerse the sample of bees in the fluid. This will prevent collected bees from escaping during the next step.
Unscrew the top and fill with fluid to the to the level indicated on the bowl.
Return the lid and gently shake for 60 seconds. The fluid will separate mites from bees. Mites will fall through the holes in the basket which can be counted.
